Re: 306 RWD Update

Diff in and running OK so far.  MOT was last Thursday (6 mile round trip) and has done no miles since so I have to run the engine in this weekend.

Otherwise just about ready to go.

Re: 306 RWD Update

Err no....!

I have to do 200-300 miles in it to run it in this weekend.

I have a dry sump oil change to do.

I still have to do the rear tracking.

The carbs need balancing.

The ECU needs changing to reduce the maximum rpm to save the engine on the first event (probably 750 rpm) and to chek the zero pint on the TPS.

The front and rear guards need fitting.

I have some tyre swops to get done (Yokohama are not going to be at events this year)

It never ends!!!!!

Re: 306 RWD Update

That's more like it !!!

Back in December I thought we had plenty of time to do the few bits to ready the Rally car.... plan on first event mid March and we might get out earlier if ready, now here we are with 6 weeks and haven't really started... plus being away I get about 3 hours a weekend after I have done the other things I want to with Sarh & Alex!!

(Do you think 16 months is too young to teach a boy to weld ????)

I haven't got much on the To-Do......  Weld in Sill support/jacking points, Good Service, mountings for quick lift jack, good clean, spray up sills & new bonnet, change starter motor.... and sort out racking in Disco for Toolbox, spares etc.....

Re: 306 RWD Update

The engine is run in OK but bad news on the diff I'm afraid.  The usual "clanging" noise that LSD do when doing low speed turns was very excessive and very jerky so much so that I decided not to risk it on the Wyedean.  Added to that there was a big vibration about 60mph which I think may be prop related so it was not going to get solved by next weekend.  So the BMW diff is back in.  Shame but better not to risk all the new bits.

Re: 306 RWD Update

Sorry to hear that, I assume being a lower ratio it will be a little noisier ? but agreed you don't want to risk anything unnecessarily

Re: 306 RWD Update

I wouldn't say it was any noisier generally (different yes) just to much clanging and banging on low speed corners and even some bends in the road.

When I got the car home I jacked the right hand rear side, put some bricks in front of the other 3 tyres and turned the rear wheel against the LSD by a socket and long lever on the centre and it was really jerky.  It was smooth when I built it on the bench.  I am guessing that something isn't right in there.

The vibration finished any chance of running it anyway.

50mph at 4000rpm in 5th - it is not going to be quiet is it?

Re: 306 RWD Update
 (United Kingdom)

The 306 came really close to not starting to the Wyedean as it should really have failed scrutineering.

  1. As I do at the beginning of each year I restuffed the 2 silencers using proper stuff.  I did not have any of the usual stuff that I use on the bigger of the 2 so I user a courser flat mat cut into smaller pieces and stuffed in.  I must have stuffed it all too tight so the box really was just a straight through because instead of sailing through at about 96dB the noise meter showed 103.  I think because of the conditions the Environmental Scrutineer was generous and let us through writing 101dB on our process card.
  2. We were scrutineered by someone that has done the car at least 3 times before.  He decided that the perspex windows looked a bit thin so he got his vernier gauge out and measured one.  The thickness according to the Blue Book has to be no less than 4mm but mine was 3.47mm.  Nothing was said but it was clear that I was going to have to replace all the perspex.  First quote - £350.  Great start to the year.
  3. The same scrutineer then pointed out the gap that was at the back of my bonnet and said that if I had an oil leak it would go all over the windscreen.  He wants thaty fixed as well.

I did point out very politely  that none of this had been mentoned when he previously scrutineered the car but no comment was returned.

I can't argue the noise test or the perspex but I am a bit pissed off that I was sold it in the first place but as it was about 10 years ago there is nothing I can do about it.  As for the bonnet, what about all these other cars that have the back of the bonnet raised at the back specifically to let some of the heat out?

Anyway as my next event looks like being the Bulldog and the same scrutineer will be there as at the Wyedean then I have to just get it all sorted.

Re: 306 RWD Update

Sorry to reply to by own post but I have just been scouring the Blue Book (on the PC of course) and all I can find that is vaguely relevant to the gap at the bacl ofg my bonnet is at C(b)8(c)

With the exception of cars of Periods A to D,
which in period specification were not equipped with
a bonnet or casing of metal or solid flame resistant
material covering and surrounding the main engine
structure, have a protective bulkhead of nonflameable
material between the engine and the
driver/passenger compartment capable of preventing
the passage of fluid or flame. Gaps must be sealed
with GRP or with putty that completely closes any
gap at all times.

If anyone else can find anthing then  please let me know otherwise I will contact said scrutineer and ask him (politely again) where in the Blue Book it says it has to be sealed.

Re: 306 RWD Update

We had a different scrutineer who told us we couldn't have a towing eye which wasn't permanently mounted to the car, whereas the BB specifically says it can be carried in the car.

I think they hibernate over winter and come out to the early rallies full of b***sh*t.
