Several crews out on the Woodpecker on 4 September............Space for one more car on our stand at the Rally Day at Castle Combe on 18 September........3 track sessions for sale as well..................
Well it is that time of year again. No more rallies for me! 5 starts, 5 finishes, 5 class results - I decided to quit while I was ahead.
The engine "let go" in 2005 and 2006 but now the dry sump system seems to have cured the lack of oil problem. Even though there have been no indication of any problem this year I feel I must to a precautionary strip down so I can see the bearings. I will strip the complete engine, replace the bearings and rebuild it. Hopefully I won't find any other problems.
As the car is even more cammy now I guess the clutch will have to be looked at. I have to slip it a lot on road sections, uphill stage starts and I have to dip it occasionaly on the stages to get back on the cam.
The car is currectly running a 5.28 BMW diff. This sounds a lot until you realise that the car is running 15" wheels and is of no use on the stages unless the revs are 5200 or over. I have found an inexpensive cure in the form of a Jaguar XJS diff. The down side is that it is bigger and heavier than the BMW unit but there is a big up side. The Jag axle was also fited to some commercial vehicles including a Thwaite Dumper Truck where it had a 6.1 CWP fitted. I managed to get hold of a brand new obsolete 6.1 CWP for very little money and also a very good XJS diff. The LSD plates in the diff are not much worn but the diff is so loose. Money spent so far about 250 pounds. Just some bearings, seals and diff plate shims to go. Then I have to get it in the car somehow. I will also need shorter driveshafts made, adapters made to fit the GKN plunge joints to the Jag output flanges and of course a new propshaft.
It is going to be a busy winter.
